Pope John Paul II described it as "a grace directed to sanctify the Church, to renew in her the taste for prayer, and to rediscover with the Holy Spirit the sense of thankfulness, of joyful praise, of confident intercession, and to be converted into a new fountain of evangelization."  He was talking about the Life in the Spirit Seminar or LSS.  To call it a "retreat" would be misleading, since it's purpose is to enable us to move forward.  The LSS is a seminar on renewal, rediscovery and conversion.  Many have characterized it as "life-changing."  But each person that takes the time and effort to go through it finds a unique gift with direct and immediate impact on their lives.

The Life in the Spirit seminar is a course which has helped many Christians find a fuller expression and commitment in their spiritual lives. It is an introduction to a life lived in the power of the Holy Spirit.

What takes place in an LSS?

The Life in the Spirit Seminar is a series of talks designed to lead people through the basic message of salvation and the action of the Holy Spirit in their lives.  In the general practice, the talks are presented over the course of 7 evenings (one evening a week for 7 weeks).  In the BLD, the talks are presented over the course of one weekend, from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.  Seven weeks before the LSS weekend, BLD assigns a guide, or “shepherd”, to each participant, or “lamb”, to help prepare.

Each talk is balanced with teaching, personal testimony, Scripture and prayer.  The participants further have small group discussion periods with their shepherds providing an important opportunity for participants to discuss their thoughts, concerns and feelings.

What is the LSS for?

The LSS is designed to help a Christian to yield to the action of the Holy Spirit in their lives. In this way, he or she may begin to sense His presence and experience Him working in and through them.  It is for changing viewpoints, taking a moment to look back on our lives and looking forward to the path ahead.  This is all in the hope of establishing, re-establishing, or deepening a personal relationship with Christ Jesus.

What is Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

On one night of the LSS, there is an opportunity for the participant, through the joint prayer of all shepherds and sponsors, to be "baptized in the Holy Spirit". One can liken this to fanning the flames in a campfire so that it may burn strongly and vigorously once again.  During the Baptism, the gifts and graces received at baptism and confirmation which have remained undeveloped or unappreciated can be brought to the open.  In so doing, one may experience, a profound personal response to the grace of God's invitation to accept and acknowledge His Son Jesus as Lord and Saviour of our lives.  To each and everyone who has attended the LSS, this experience is unique.

What is the Holy Spirit?

The right question is “Who?”  He is the third person of the Holy Trinity, The Spirit of Life, "the Lord, the Giver of Life", sent to the church at Pentecost by the Father and the Son.  He discloses the glory of Jesus Christ.  Furthermore, He convicts us of sin, renews our inner being, induces faith, equips us for righteousness, creates communion, and empowers for service.

The loving unity of Spirit-filled Christians and churches is a powerful sign of the truth of Christianity.

What to bring to the LSS?

The most important, other than being physically present, is to bring an open heart.  A closed heart is a heart of stone, hardened by years of disappointment, resentment, unforgiveness, bitterness and hate.  An open heart is ready to be cleaned, to be made as white as snow, to be purified and then filled with the presence of the Spirit.  Come with an open heart.
